Moss frame in metal with middle green reindeer moss for the 'Akaso' shops in Antwerp and Brussels. Owner Philippe Vertriest loves the natural look of our moss works. We really love the powerful and pure collection in his shops.

For his first store, Vertriest opted resolutely for his home city of Brussels. In his new store in Antwerp, the creation of his collections is explained via photos and videos of the workshops in Ethiopia. In addition, there is also a moss-wall, made by Mosmuur, ‘reminding me of the intense green landscape in the south of Ethiopia’.

Within walking distance of the MOMU, the Belgian fashion brand ‘Akaso’ opened its second store. The founder of the brand, Philippe Vertriest, is the father of two Ethiopian daughters and built Akaso from the ground up after discovering the book ‘Painted Bodies – African Body Painting Art, Tattoos & Scarification’: a concept that connects African artists and Belgian designers.

The label consists of collections for which the patterns and prints were designed by the Ethiopian ‘Karastam.’  The tribe is known for its striking bodypainting which is the inspiration for the prints. Every print in the collection is the work of a permanent team of artists – both women and men – from the Karastam. Akaso reimburses them in the same manner it would with Western freelance designers. The garments are made in Europe, with European materials.
